Bodyboarding in Devon

Use a bodyboard to catch waves back to shore.

Bodyboarding is fast, fun, and easy to pick up. You paddle out. Turn back towards the beach. And then, if you get the timing right, the wave does the rest.

It makes for a brilliant introduction to the sea, especially as an alternative to (or step towards!) surfing. Using smaller boards, you lie down rather than stand up, catching waves as they roll back towards shore. No complicated technique. Just timing, balance, and a lot of laughter.

Most of our bodyboarding sessions take place at Westward Ho!, where the wide beach and reliable waves are ideal for beginners. Depending on conditions, we may also travel to other beaches around North Devon, such as Saunton Sands or Croyde Bay, to give groups the best possible experience on the day.

Our qualified instructors will start with the basics. You’ll learn how to stay safe in the water, read the waves, and control the board – all before heading out to put it into practice.

Bodyboarding is perfect for schools, groups and teams, or anyone keen to enjoy the North Devon coastline. If you’d like to give it a try, get in touch with our team today.

FAQs

Show FAQs

Are your bodyboarding lessons open to the public?

Yes, our bodyboarding lessons are open to the public at selected times throughout the season. Sessions are led by qualified instructors and are suitable for a range of ages and abilities, from beginners to those with some experience. All necessary equipment is provided. Availability depends on dates, tides, and sea conditions, so we recommend getting in touch in advance to check session times and book your place.

Can we include bodyboarding as part of a school residential?

Yes, bodyboarding can be included as part of a school residential. It’s a popular and exciting activity that can be tailored to suit the age, ability, and confidence of the group. All sessions are led by qualified instructors, with full safety briefings and appropriate equipment provided. Activities are scheduled around tides and sea conditions, and we’ll work with you in advance to make sure the programme meets your learning objectives and keeps everyone safe and engaged.

How do we book?

Booking with us is easy. Simply complete the enquiry form on our website or give us a call. As programmes vary depending on group size, age and activities, we’ll check availability, talk through your requirements and guide you through the rest of the booking process.

What if the weather is bad, or there are no waves?

If the weather or sea conditions aren’t suitable, we always have alternative options. Our instructors continually assess conditions and will adapt the session to keep everyone safe and make the most of the day. This might mean running a different watersports activity, switching to a land-based session, or rescheduling where possible. Safety comes first, and we’ll always aim to provide a fun, worthwhile experience regardless of the conditions.

What should we wear or bring for watersports?

Please bring old trainers or water shoes that can get wet (no flip-flops or bare feet), a swimsuit to wear under your kit, and a towel for afterwards. We recommend comfortable clothes you don’t mind getting wet, plus a warm layer for after the session. All specialist safety equipment (wetsuits, buoyancy aids, helmets where needed) is provided by Skern Lodge. On sunny days, sunscreen and a water bottle are also a good idea.
